We foster exciting new collaborations across what are usually disparate disciplines. We have a growing number of Centres and Institutes where colleagues from SHAPE and STEM backgrounds collaborate to develop technological innovations through challenge-led research.

Advanced Care Research Centre

This multi-disciplinary research programme combines research across fields including medicine and other care professions, engineering, informatics, data and social sciences.

Its vision is high‐quality data‐driven, personalised and affordable care that supports the independence, dignity and quality‐of‐life of people in later life living in their own homes and in supported care environments.

Centre for Investing Innovation

The Centre for Investing Innovation is a strategic partnership between global asset management company abrdn and the University of Edinburgh. It is addressing challenges facing the investment and asset management sector, including how to improve demonstrable societal benefit.

Centre for Purpose-Driven Innovation in Banking

The Centre for Purpose-Driven Innovation in Banking combines business insights from NatWest Group (NWG) with the University’s research, data and social science expertise to co-create data-driven, novel solutions for the future of banking.

Edinburgh Climate Change Institute (ECCI)

ECCI is a physical and virtual hub for climate change research, skills, knowledge exchange and innovation.

Harnessing academic staff expertise from the University and beyond, they collaborate with governments, business and academics to help facilitate interdisciplinary interactions across natural and social sciences, guiding research and its translation to promote a just and resilient transition to the post-carbon world.

Edinburgh Futures Institute

The Institute brings people, data and diverse disciplines together in our open, what-if environment to spark the unexpected and create new ideas. Research focus on challenges and opportunities posed by Data Driven innovation in four main sectors: Financial Services (including Fintech); Creative Industries; Tourism and Festivals; and Gov-tech and Data Civics. In addition to this, it supports two cross cutting themes: Future Infrastructure and the Ethics of Data and AI.

Energy@Edinburgh

Energy @ Edinburgh offers a collaborative approach to global energy futures involving the University of Edinburgh’s large and expanding body of world-class energy research expertise in science and engineering, environmental sciences, social sciences and beyond.

Working together across disciplines, and collaborating with external research institutions, government bodies, industry partners and civil society, we enable and promote sustainable, equitable and secure energy for all.

Global Academy of Agriculture and Food Systems

The Global Academy of Agriculture and Food Systems seeks to understand the drivers of food system and planetary health challenges, and drive the development of mutually beneficial solutions through our unique breadth of expertise, holistic approach and strong partnerships.

Institute for the Study of Science Technology and Innovation

The ISSTI brings together researchers from across the University involved in the social and policy aspects of science, technology and innovation, with a focus on life science innovation, information and communication technologies, energy technologies and environmental innovation and historical sociology of science, technology and medicine.

The Institute strives to transform health in society by working with people, populations and data. It is also the Health and Social Care Data-Driven Innovation Hub, part of the Edinburgh and South East Scotland City Region Deal. It has four composite centres: the Centre for Biomedicine, Self and Society, the Centre for Global Health, the Centre for Medical Informatics and the Centre for Population Health Sciences.
